82% of Marathon Runners Develop Acute Kidney Injury: Implications

A study appearing in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases had a startling statistic: 82% of marathon runners developed acute kidney injury during the race. I sat down with the first and senior authors of the study to discuss the implications, and how dedicated marathon runners can avoid kidney damage while maintaining pace.

Disclosure: I am part of the Program of Applied Translational Research at Yale, but had no role in this study. I am also an editor at AJKD but joined the editorial board after this manuscript was accepted.
